History & character
From Settlement to Noble District
Döbling, first mentioned in 1114, derives its name from the Slavic *topl’ika, meaning "wetland". The region has been inhabited for about 5000 years and is among the oldest settlement areas in the Vienna region. During Roman times, significant finds were made, such as a watchtower and a Roman cemetery. In the Middle Ages, the villages that now make up Döbling emerged. However, the modern era brought numerous destructions, including Turkish sieges and the plague, which hampered the area's development for a long time. It was not until the 18th century that a surge began, as the area gained importance as a royal hunting ground.
Today, Döbling is considered a noble district with its villas in the Vienna Woods and significant wine production. Despite its upscale image, a balanced population structure, shaped by municipal housing and cooperative living arrangements, creates a diverse living environment.
