History & character
From Chrottendorf to Unterdöbling
Unterdöbling, once known as Chrottendorf, was an independent municipality until 1892 and evolved over the centuries into a district of Vienna in the 19th municipal district Döbling. The name derives from the Slavic term for "swampy water," which refers to its location by the Krottenbach. In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants were farmers who produced for their own needs and cultivated wine and grain. The first documented separation from Ober- and Unterdöbling is mentioned in 1591, with Unterdöbling's development lagging behind that of Oberdöbling. In the 19th century, the population grew rapidly, and in 1892, the Döbling district was established, of which Unterdöbling is a part.
Today, Unterdöbling is a quiet district characterized by a mix of historical structures and newer settlements. Its geographical location, defined by the Krottenbach and the adjacent plateau of the Kahlenberg, gives the neighborhood a distinct character and makes it an attractive place to live in Vienna.
