Heiligenstadt: Ein ruhiges Grätzl in Wien

Heiligenstadt, whose name likely derives from a sacred site in pagan times, was first mentioned in 1120 as St. Michael. The area is an ancient settlement that has been inhabited for over 5000 years. The Romans left traces here, and in the Middle Ages, Heiligenstadt developed into a prosperous place known for viticulture and one of the first schools in the vicinity. Despite several plundering and devastation, especially during the Turkish sieges, the economy recovered in the 18th century. A public bathhouse that utilized a hot spring contributed to the local prosperity. In the second half of the 19th century, Heiligenstadt gained popularity as a summer resort, attracting wealthy Viennese citizens and tourists.

Today, Heiligenstadt is a district in Vienna's 19th municipal district Döbling, characterized by its tranquil location along the Vienna Danube Canal and proximity to the Vienna Woods. The old village center, which revolves around Probusgasse, reflects the area's history and has retained its character as a pleasant residential area.
