Oberdöbling

History & character

From Agriculture to Urban Development

Oberdöbling was an independent municipality until the end of 1891 and was first mentioned in 1114 in documents. The name derives from the Slavic term for "swampy water," indicating its location by the Krottenbach stream. Originally, the area was inhabited by farmers who primarily produced for their own needs, while wine and grain were cultivated for sale. Over the centuries, Oberdöbling developed through the settlement of the nobility and its appeal as an imperial hunting ground. From the 18th century onwards, the area grew, new streets were created, and the construction of "second homes" increased. A building boom in the 19th century led to a rapid rise in population and the number of houses. In 1892, Oberdöbling became part of the 19th municipal district of Döbling. Today, Oberdöbling is a district characterized by a blend of urban life and historical substance.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
