History & character
From Sufringen to Obersievering
Obersievering is now part of the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling, and emerged from the once independent municipality of Obersievering, which was united with Unter-Sievering in 1892. The name originates from 1114 when the place was first mentioned as Sufringen. The name evolved through various forms to Sievering and refers to the followers of a man named Suver(o)/Sufr. In the Middle Ages, the name became associated with Saint Severin, whose emblem can also be found in the parish church. The region was a significant quarry during Roman times and was later characterized by farmers who cultivated wine.
Over the centuries, Obersievering experienced various ownership changes and suffered from the Turkish wars and the plague in the 18th century. These events influenced the development of the area, which grew more slowly than neighboring Unter-Sievering due to poor transport links. In 1892, the area was finally incorporated into Vienna, and around 1900, construction began with apartment buildings. Today, the old town centers of Unter- and Obersievering are still clearly recognizable, giving the district its unique character.
