History & character
From Vineyards to Urban Idyl in Nußdorf
Nußdorf was an independent municipality until the end of 1891 and developed from a medieval village core primarily characterized by farmers. They produced mainly for their own needs and engaged in viticulture, which became an important economic branch for the area. The settlement also benefited from a ferry right that allowed for transport across the Danube. Over the centuries, Nußdorf suffered from destruction due to wars but managed to recover repeatedly, experiencing growth especially in the 19th century when it became a popular excursion destination. The opening of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn and Kahlenbergbahn contributed to its connectivity and development. In 1892, Nußdorf was incorporated into Vienna.
Today, Nußdorf is a quiet district in the 19th Viennese municipal district, characterized by a charming mix of historical elements and modern quality of life. The vineyards and proximity to nature define the character of the district and attract many people who appreciate living peacefully within the city.
