History & character
From Roman Settlement to Urban Development
Klosterneuburg has a long history that dates back to the first century AD when a Roman military camp was established here. The first written mention as 'Nivvenburc' comes from 1108. In the 11th century, Klosterneuburg developed into a significant residence city when Margrave Leopold III and Agnes of Waiblingen founded the Klosterneuburg Monastery. The Danube posed both a threat through flooding and a vital trade artery. In the 13th century, the separation of the districts of Klosterneuburg and Korneuburg brought new challenges for the population. Over the centuries, the city experienced many sieges, especially during the Turkish sieges, and was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
Today, Klosterneuburg is the third largest city in Lower Austria, situated picturesque between the Danube and the Vienna Woods. The city has preserved its historical charm and offers a successful blend of urban life and natural recreational areas. Its proximity to Vienna and numerous leisure opportunities make Klosterneuburg an attractive place to live.
