History & character

From Suburb to Urban District

Hernals is the 17th district of Vienna, formed in 1892 from the independent municipalities of Hernals, Dornbach, and Neuwaldegg. The history of Hernals dates back to its incorporation into Vienna, with Hernals being the most populous of the three municipalities. During the Vienna Gründerzeit, the district saw significant construction activity that continued into the turn of the century. The demographic diversity remains characteristic of Hernals, where late and high Gründerzeit quarters coexist with municipal housing complexes and old town centers. Residents appreciate the district for its proximity to the city center and surrounding recreational areas. The strong mix of the population is reflected in the diversity of the district's parts, offering a varied living environment.
