History & character
From Village to Vienna's Cadastral Community
Dornbach was first mentioned in a document in 1044. The name, which appeared as Doringinpach around 1115, indicates a long history beginning with the donation of two noble farms to the St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg. Over the centuries, a small village developed around the church, which was consecrated in 1139. Destruction during the Turkish wars and subsequent rebuilding shaped Dornbach's development, whose population was long dependent on viticulture. From around 1800, the renting of summer apartments began, leading to an expansion of the village. In 1892, Dornbach was incorporated with Hernals and Neuwaldegg into the 17th Vienna municipal district, having 3,369 inhabitants at that time.
Today, Dornbach is one of 89 Vienna cadastral communities and has managed to retain its village character despite urban densification. The blend of historic villas, apartment buildings, and municipal housing shapes the area's image. The Frauenfeld, in particular, shows a denser construction and resembles more the neighboring parts of Hernals than the loosely built, bourgeois district areas.
