History & character
From Nameless Settlement to Josefstadt
Josefstadt has been part of the Vienna city area since 1850 and was established as the 8th district in 1861. The settlement of the area began late, with a nameless settlement near the Inner City in the Middle Ages. Intensive construction activity only started at the end of the 17th century, when the settlement was acquired by the city of Vienna in 1700 and named Josefstadt after Emperor Joseph I. The district developed into a residential area for the bourgeoisie and houses many civil servants as well as artists and intellectuals. Today, Josefstadt is characterized by residential buildings from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, with 75.4 percent of the buildings constructed before 1918. The district is considered part of Vienna's historic center, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
