History & character
From Vineyard to Urban Settlement
Strozzigrund, once an independent municipality, was perceived as one of the smallest suburbs of Vienna until 1850. Originally characterized by vineyards and fields, the first houses were built in 1699. The significant transformation began with Countess Maria Katharina Strozzi's acquisition of the dry Lerchenfeld in 1702, where she constructed a summer palace. This led to the elevation of the area to a free knight's estate by Emperor Leopold I, laying the foundation for the later independent suburb. Over the years, ownership changed hands several times until the City of Vienna acquired the lordship in 1746. The character of the district shifted in the following decades, especially when large parts of the garden were sold in 1770, leading to the subdivision of the land and the construction of numerous new houses.
