History & character
From Suburb to Urban Neighborhood
Altlerchenfeld was an independent municipality until 1850, when it was incorporated into the city of Vienna. The name Lerchenfeld first appeared in 1295, with its exact origin being disputed. From the 18th century onwards, the area developed, initially characterized by small, poor houses, particularly due to the economic upswing of the neighboring Schottenfeld. The construction significantly increased after the building of the Linienwall, leading to the settlement of workers, especially from the textile industry. The population grew considerably in the 19th century. Today, Altlerchenfeld is a quiet district in the 8th district of Josefstadt, protected by a building conservation zone, offering a mix of historical and modern elements.
