History & character
From Suburbs to Urban Life
Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, the 15th district of Vienna, has its roots in the villages of Reindorf, Braunhirschen, and Rustendorf, which emerged after the second Turkish siege. In the 19th century, the area became densely built, with its historical development shaped by the opening of the West Railway in 1858 and the incorporation of the municipalities into Vienna in 1892. The district is divided into two halves, leading to a North-South differentiation. Previously, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus was often associated with worn-out Gründerzeit districts and labor migration, while street prostitution has since been pushed to the outskirts.
Today, the district presents itself as an urban space with high population density and proximity to the old town, yet lacking the typical local patriotism found in other outer districts. In recent years, a growing neighborhood consciousness has been observed, particularly in the Nibelungenviertel and around Reindorfgasse. Among the most notable buildings are the Westbahnhof, the Wiener Stadthalle, and the Church of Maria vom Siege.
