History & character
From Fields to Urban Life in Fünfhaus
Fünfhaus, a part of the 15th district of Vienna, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, has its roots in the Middle Ages when the area was primarily characterized by fields and vineyards. These lands were mostly under ecclesiastical ownership, particularly the Barnabite College of St. Michael. After the destruction during the Second Turkish Siege, five villages emerged, including Fünfhaus. The name derives from a small group of five winegrower and gardener houses that existed until around 1708 on present-day Clementinengasse. During the 19th century, Fünfhaus experienced a construction boom, transforming it into an urban neighborhood with a regular street grid and Gründerzeit buildings. The development of the area was facilitated by the opening of the Schmelz Bridge in 1876, leading to the creation of Neu-Fünfhaus and the Nibelungenviertel, which was further expanded during the interwar period.
Today, Fünfhaus is an urban district characterized by a mix of historical and modern buildings, as well as good public transport connections and a diverse infrastructure.
