Reindorf

History & character

From Vineyard to Urban Settlement

The name Reindorf first appeared in 1411, originally referring to agricultural and vineyard lands in low-lying areas. This medieval settlement was likely destroyed by floods or enemies. In the 18th century, the area began to be repopulated, rebuilt after the second Turkish siege in 1683. By 1770, Reindorf already had 52 houses, and by 1801, this number had risen to 101. In 1863, Reindorf merged with Braunhirschen and Rustendorf to form the municipality of Rudolfsheim. The architectural protection zone Braunhirsch-Reindorf now includes several buildings along the outer Mariahilfer Straße and Reindorfgasse, particularly around the parish church of Reindorf. The designation Reindorf is also retained in the parish of the Roman Catholic Church, which now extends far beyond the historical boundaries.
