History & character
From Farmland to Urban District
Schmelz is a former parade and drill ground located in the 15th district of Vienna, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. Originally, Schmelz was a fertile field and meadow area, first documented around 1309. From 1847, the area was used as a parade and drill ground, as the previous location on the Josefstädter Glacis was deemed dusty and impractical. This usage continued until the end of the monarchy in 1918. After the closure of the Schmelz cemetery, where the victims of the March Revolution in 1848 were buried, the March Park today commemorates this site. In 1911, construction began on the Schmelz, with secessionist and neoclassical architecture emerging. The settlement and residential complex Schmelz, one of the first municipal buildings in Vienna, was constructed starting in 1919 and marked the beginning of a second wave of construction that continued into the 1930s.
