History & character
From Village Settlement to Urban District
Sechshaus, the southernmost part of the 15th district of Vienna, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, has its roots in the time after the second Turkish siege in 1683. From the ruins of that destruction, several villages emerged, including Sechshaus, which was founded on the former Meinhartsdorf. Initially, it consisted of only five houses, separated from Gumpendorf by the Linienwall. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, craftsmen and manufactories settled here, relying on the water supply from the unregulated Wienfluss. Until 1848, Sechshaus retained its industrial character before being incorporated into the 14th district in 1892. After several boundary adjustments, it became part of the 15th district, Fünfhaus, in 1938.
Today, Sechshaus is characterized by dense construction and an irregular street layout. The few green spaces and the building protection zone around Sparkassaplatz give the district a unique character that is both urban and traditional.
