History & character
From Neolithic Settlement to Industrial Town
Schwechat is a municipal town with a long history that dates back to prehistory. Neolithic and Bronze Age finds, as well as a Roman cavalry fort, testify to early settlement. From the 8th century onwards, Bavarian and Franconian settlers established themselves in the region. In 1334, Schwechat was first documented as a market. Over the course of the Middle Ages, the town developed into a center for crafts and industry. The establishment of the first breweries in the 16th and 17th centuries laid the foundation for the now well-known brand 'Schwechater Bier'. After World War II, reconstruction began, and in 1954, Schwechat regained its status as an independent municipality in Lower Austria.
Today, Schwechat is primarily known for the Vienna International Airport and Austria's largest oil refinery. The town has evolved into a modern location with diverse economic activities while preserving its historical character.
