History & character
From Workers' Community to Urban Diversity
Simmering is the 11th district of Vienna and was established in 1892 from the independent municipalities of Simmering and Kaiserebersdorf, along with parts of other municipalities. The area was first documented in 1028 and has been a center for breweries and industry for centuries. The Wiener Zentralfriedhof, opened in 1874, significantly shapes the district's identity. Historically, the Simmeringer Haide served as a site for festivities and military exercises, while during World War II, a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp was established here. After the war, Simmering experienced various border changes and a steady increase in population.
Today, Simmering is known as a classic workers' and industrial district that stands out due to its favorable transport connections. The age structure of the population is relatively young, making the district a vibrant place with urban diversity.
