History & character
From Independent Municipality to District Part
Albern was an independent municipality in Lower Austria until 1938 and is now a district part of the 11th district of Vienna, Simmering. The first documented mention of the place dates back to 1162. The name derives from the Albe poplar, which grew in the area. The inhabitants primarily lived from fishing, which is also reflected in the district's coat of arms. Over the centuries, Albern was destroyed multiple times by floods, significantly impacting the development of the area. It was only after the completion of the Vienna Danube Regulation in 1875 that living conditions improved, leading to an increase in the population. The area remained largely unaffected by industrialization until the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, which prompted further expansion, including the construction of a grain port between 1939 and 1942 that shaped Albern's future development.
