Groß-Enzersdorf

History & character

From Early Settlement to Town Municipality

Groß-Enzersdorf has a long history that dates back to the first settlement around 3000 years ago. The region was visited by Saxons under Charlemagne in 791 to defend against the Avars. The name of the place, originally Encines Dorf, originated around 870 on the Danube island of Sachsengang, where the present-day castle stands. Over the centuries, the town faced numerous challenges, including devastation by the Turks and looting during the Thirty Years' War. In 1803, Groß-Enzersdorf became part of the Habsburg monarchy and was granted town rights in 1396. Following the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938, the municipality was temporarily incorporated into Vienna and became the namesake for a new Viennese district. In 1954, Groß-Enzersdorf regained its independence as a municipality.

Today, Groß-Enzersdorf is located in the Marchfeld, just 18 km east of Vienna. The town borders the protected Lobau area and offers an attractive residential location due to its proximity to the capital. The character of the town is shaped by a mix of historical elements and modern living options, making it an interesting place to live for many people.
