History & character
From Historic District to Modern Donaustadt
Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna, has its roots in the 19th century when the name was first used for an area in the 2nd district. This designation emerged after the Danube regulation in the 1870s made the area suitable for construction. However, the original name did not gain popularity, and thus Donaustadt was officially designated for the new district in 1954. Historical events, such as the Battle of Aspern and Eßling in 1809, shaped the region, while regular flooding of the Danube hindered economic development until the regulation created numerous side arms.
Today, Donaustadt is the largest and most populous district of Vienna, featuring a diverse landscape. From large housing estates to modern high-rise areas like Donau City, and the recreational areas along the Alte Donau and Lobau, the district offers a varied quality of life. The Seestadt Aspern, one of Europe's largest urban development projects, also contributes to the dynamic character of Donaustadt.
