History & character
From Floodplains to a Modern Residential Area
Hirschstetten was founded in 1158 as a street village and was an independent municipality until 1904. The name Herstetten derives from "Stätten herent der Donau" and points to the original farming village's location, surrounded by floodplains and water arms. Throughout history, the area was often affected by floods and partially destroyed in wars, such as during the Battle of Aspern and Essling in 1809. However, the baroque Schloss Hirschstetten, built between 1713 and 1724, remained intact and today features a French cannonball embedded in its wall as a reminder of the past. After the opening of the eastern railway branches in 1870, many gardeners, farmers, and workers settled in the area, contributing to its development. In 1904, Hirschstetten was incorporated into Vienna, and in 1938 it became part of the 22nd district Donaustadt. Today, Hirschstetten is a quiet district that charms with its geographical location and proximity to nature.
