History & character
From Independent Community to Donaustadt
Eßling was an independent municipality until 1938 and has a long history that dates back to the Bronze Age. The name Eßling derives from the Ezzelarn family, which held significant positions in the Vienna city administration during the Middle Ages. A historically significant event was the Battle of Eßling and Aspern in 1809, where Napoleon I suffered his first defeat. After various name changes, Eßling became part of the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt, in 1938. The old town center is surrounded by agricultural land, while several settlements like Neueßling, Schippani settlement, and Wegmayer settlement shape the area. Today, Eßling is considered one of the major urban expansion areas of Vienna due to its location and quality of life, but it also faces challenges such as the increasing individual traffic.
