History & character
From the Riverbank to a City District
Kagran was first mentioned in 1199 as Chagaran and derives its name from the related Wagram. The name referred to this area as the 'riverbank of the Danube' from times before the regulation of the river. Until 1904, Kagran was an independent municipality before being incorporated into Vienna. During the era of Red Vienna, numerous municipal buildings were constructed, including the Freihof settlement, the largest settlement complex of that time. After World War II, Kagran remained largely rural, but in the 1970s, the introduction of large residential buildings and the Donauzentrum, Vienna's largest shopping center, changed its character.
Today, Kagran is a district in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt, characterized by a mix of residential areas and urban life. A part of the district lies in the 21st district, Floridsdorf. The proximity to the New Danube and Copa Beach, a popular beach area, contributes to the quality of life, making Kagran an attractive place to live.
