Aspern

History & character

From Independent Community to Modern District

Aspern was an independent municipality until it was incorporated into Vienna in 1904/05. The area has been settled since the Neolithic period, with the first documented mention occurring in 1258. The village faced several floods and suffered during the Turkish sieges. A significant event in its history was the Battle of Aspern in 1809, where the Austrian army under Archduke Karl defeated the French troops. The development of the area transitioned from agricultural roots to small-scale settlement structures that still characterize the southeastern part today. After Aspern remained part of Vienna in 1954, it became part of the 22nd district, Donaustadt, and continued to evolve.
