History & character
From a Mill District to a Modern City
Kaisermühlen has been a district of Vienna since 1850 and was originally an area mainly inhabited by operators of ship mills, as well as loggers and fishermen. Until 1875, the district was located on the right bank of the main arm of the unregulated Danube. The establishment of a steamship station in 1830 increased Kaisermühlen's economic significance. However, following the regulation of the Danube and its incorporation in 1850, the area evolved, and the ship mills lost their importance. During the interwar period, large municipal buildings were constructed, and public transport connections improved with the introduction of the tram. After the annexation of Austria, Kaisermühlen was transferred from the 2nd district to the 21st district in 1938 and has been part of the 22nd district, Donaustadt, since 1954.
Today, Kaisermühlen is an urban neighborhood characterized by the UNO City and modern residential and commercial areas. The Reichsbrücke remains a central connection to the city center, complemented by additional bridges. With the Kaisermühlen subway station, the district is well integrated into the transport network, enhancing the quality of life and providing a mix of urban living and nature at the Danube Park.
