History & character
From Independent Municipality to Farming Community
Breitenlee was first mentioned in 1160 as 'Preitenle' and was an independent municipality in Lower Austria until 1938. The village came under the ownership of the Schottenstift in 1200 through a charter. After suffering severe damage from Kurucs and Turks, Breitenlee was rebuilt over 165 years, with the Baroque church dedicated to St. Anna and the estate of the Schottenstift becoming central elements of the village. Over the centuries, Breitenlee underwent numerous changes, particularly due to its incorporation into Vienna and its separation after World War II, leading to its current status as part of the 22nd Vienna district, Donaustadt.
Today, Breitenlee is a district with significant areas for residential development, known as Vienna's largest 'farming community.' Many gardeners who relocated from Kagran have found new cultivation areas here. The district is well-connected through Breitenleer Straße and the Wien Aspern Nord station, which provides access to the subway and regional trains. Additionally, there is a volunteer fire department that has been in operation since 1880.
