History & character
From Babenberg Fief to Donaustadt
Stadlau was first mentioned in 1150 as Stadelouve and was originally a fief of the Babenberg family. The inhabitants were free, relatively wealthy farmers who cultivated the area between the Danube bank and today's Lusthaus in the Prater. Over the centuries, Stadlau developed from a small village with about 10 to 15 houses around 1820 into a railway and industrial location. In 1904, Stadlau became part of the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt, after previously belonging to the municipality of Floridsdorf. Development continued with the construction of churches and schools that strengthened the community.
Today, Stadlau presents itself as a district with a diffuse designation, as there is no clear town center and the boundaries to neighboring districts are not always distinct. A part of the Danube Island belongs to Stadlau, and the area is characterized by a mix of residential and industrial spaces that connect the historical heritage with modern urban development.
