Walking minutes to the nearest metro station (U1 to U6), per inhabited 250 m cell · as of: August 2026
In Vienna the metro is the backbone of getting around, and how far it is from your door varies a lot by district. wohnwahn measures the walk to the nearest of the 99 U-Bahn stations for every inhabited 250 m cell. The district where the metro is closest to the most homes is Mariahilf (1060), with 100% of homes within a 10-minute walk.
And we show what no portal does: the areas that get a brand-new metro soon, through the planned U5 and U2 extensions.

Darker means a shorter walk to the U-Bahn. The coloured lines are the real network (U1 to U6); dashed lines and hollow stops are the planned U5 and U2 extensions. Tap the map for the walk at that spot.
Only cells within about a 18-minute walk of a station are shaded, so the map stays focused on where the metro actually reaches. Source: Wiener Linien timetable (stations) and the U2xU5 plan (City of Vienna).
Ranked by the share of homes within a 10-minute walk of a U-Bahn station. The stricter 5-minute share and the median walk are shown next to each district.
Method: for every inhabited 250 m cell the straight-line distance to the nearest of the 99 U-Bahn stations, turned into a walking time (about 80 m per minute, with a detour factor). Vienna only, the U-Bahn lies entirely within the city; the outer edges of large districts pull their share down honestly. Prices: asking prices per m² (condos), immopreise.at / derStandard-Preisspiegel, as of Dezember 2025.
Every U-Bahn line with its stations, the districts it serves and the flats along it.
These places get a brand-new U-Bahn through the U5 (new line) and the U2 extension. Buying or renting near a future station is a bet on the area, and one no portal flags for you.

A flat directly over a busy station entrance can mean crowds and noise. One or two quiet streets away, still within 5 minutes, is often the sweet spot.
Areas like Hernals or around the Wienerberg gain a U-Bahn through U5 and U2. Today they rank lower on access; that is exactly where a future station lifts the location.
Outside the U-Bahn’s reach, S-Bahn and tram often connect just as fast. Check the commute page for real travel times, not just station distance.

Mariahilf (1060): 100% of homes are within a 10-minute walk of a U-Bahn station, ahead of Innere Stadt and Josefstadt. The inner districts score near 100%; large outer districts much less. Source: Wiener Linien station data per 250 m cell.
As a rule of thumb, within a 5-minute walk (about 400 m) is excellent and within 10 minutes (about 800 m) is good. We show the exact walk for each location so you can judge it yourself, instead of a listing simply claiming "close to the U-Bahn".
This page is strictly about the U-Bahn (U1 to U6), because that is what people search for. In the outer districts and around Vienna the S-Bahn often connects just as fast; the commute page covers real travel times across all modes.
The U5 (a new line via Frankhplatz, AKH and on towards Hernals) and the U2 extension (via Pilgramgasse and Matzleinsdorfer Platz to the Wienerberg) add new stations from around 2030. Areas like Hernals and the Wienerberg gain metro access they don’t have today.
