History & character

From Suburb to Working-Class District

Margareten has been part of Vienna since 1850 and was established as the 5th municipal district in 1861. The district originated from the former suburb of Margareten and was separated from the 4th district, Wieden. Initially, Margareten had a rural character, with numerous gardens and meadows. With the industrialization in the 19th century, the district increasingly transformed into a densely populated working-class area. The living conditions around the turn of the century were often unfavorable, as apartments were frequently overcrowded. Today, Margareten is a typical inner district characterized by high population density and a low proportion of green spaces. Numerous council housing projects shape the urban landscape and reflect the district's social structure.
