Nikolsdorf

History & character

From Street Settlement to Urban Neighborhood

Nikolsdorf is a suburban area of Vienna founded between 1555 and 1568, developed as a planned street settlement. The name is derived either from Nikolaus Olai, the Archbishop of Gran, or from the convent of St. Nikolai in Singerstraße. By the early 17th century, Nikolsdorf had its own judge and was purchased by the municipality of Vienna in 1727. It was incorporated in 1850 as part of the new 4th district Wieden and was assigned to the 5th district Margareten in 1862. Today, Nikolsdorf presents itself as an urban neighborhood with a characteristic mix of historical and modern elements, catering to the needs of its residents.
