History & character
From the Rüdenhaus to the District of Hundsturm
Hundsturm, first mentioned in 1632, developed around a Rüdenhaus built in 1600 by Archduke Matthias. The name Hundsturm may derive from this Rüdenhaus or the former Hundsmühle. In the 17th century, the settlement emerged mainly along Schönbrunner Straße. From 1842, the Hundsturm estate belonged to the city of Vienna, and between 1849 and 1850, the area was briefly an independent municipality before becoming part of the 4th district, Wieden, in 1850. In 1861/1862, Hundsturm was assigned to the 5th district, Margareten. In the 19th century, the suburb of Hundsturm included an area outside the Linienwall, which was increasingly developed from 1894 onward. Today, Hundsturm is an urban district characterized by its cultural institutions, such as the Volkstheater.
