Laurenzergrund

History & character

From Monastic Ownership to Urban Community

Laurenzergrund is a district in the 5th municipal district of Margareten in Vienna. The name originates from the amalgamation of the property of the nuns of Maria Magdalena and the Laurenzerinnen, which began in 1533. Over time, the property expanded, leading to the development of a suburb along Laurenzgasse, south of Wiedner Hauptstraße, where the Florianikirche once stood. In 1806, the Laurenzergrund was acquired by the municipality of Vienna from the property of the religious fund. The incorporation took place in 1850 as part of the new 4th district of Wieden, before the district was assigned to the 5th district of Margareten in 1862. Today, Laurenzergrund features a quiet urban atmosphere characterized by historical substance and a modern lifestyle.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
