History & character

From Zeismannsbrunn to Modern Neubau

Neubau has its roots in the village of Zeismannsbrunn, which has been named after the patron of St. Ulrich's Church since 1302. From 1693, the western part of St. Ulrich became known as the independent place Neubau. The district was incorporated into the Vienna city area in 1850 and designated as the 7th municipal district in 1861. The buildings mainly date from the period between 1880 and 1910 and were characterized by numerous industrial enterprises. The Spittelberg had a bad reputation at that time, while Neubaugasse became the center of the Austrian film industry in the early 1920s. With the opening of the MuseumsQuartier in 2001, the district gained a significant cultural attraction that shapes the cityscape and attracts the population. Today, Neubau is a vibrant district characterized by a mix of historical buildings and modern facilities.
