Sankt Ulrich

History & character

From Suburb to Building Protection Zone

St. Ulrich was an independent suburb until 1850 and was first documented in 1202 as Zeismannsbrunn. The mint master Dietrich founded a chapel dedicated to St. Ulrich in 1211, leading to the name being adopted by the surrounding settlement. Over the centuries, various property complexes emerged, which were involved in ongoing conflicts between Vienna and the Schottenstift. By 1314, the area was densely built up and developed into a grabenangerdorf, with many houses destroyed during the Turkish sieges of Vienna. St. Ulrich also played a role in the Reformation, but was elevated to its own parish during the Counter-Reformation. A fire in 1835 destroyed almost the entire village, and today only a few remnants of the old settlement remain, particularly around the St. Ulrich Square with its Baroque houses and medieval walls.

Today, St. Ulrich is a district in the 7th Vienna municipal district Neubau and is defined as a building protection zone. The character of the area is shaped by its historical development, which is reflected in its architecture and urban structure.
