Lerchenfeld

History & character

From Hunting Ground to Urban District

Lerchenfeld was originally a forested area, first mentioned in documents in 1295. In 1337, the ducal court acquired most of the area for hunting purposes. The name may derive either from a former larch forest or from the hunting of larks. However, a Slavic or Celtic origin of the name is more likely. In the 17th century, settlement began, and by 1700, Neulerchenfeld had developed alongside Altlerchenfeld. By 1703, the area belonged to the city of Vienna. In the 19th century, Lerchenfeld had a dubious reputation as a gathering place for the lower classes, as described in a Biedermeier travel guide. Today, Lerchenfeld is a densely built urban district, with its name continuing in numerous streets and neighborhoods, such as Altlerchenfeld and Neulerchenfeld.

Real building heights (official Vienna building model, computed from the BEV laser scan in the surroundings), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. In Vienna the terrain rarely matters: ten minutes in the Innere Stadt, and just as little at the Döbling vineyards, where the slope lies to the north-west and never touches the southern sun. It only tells in the Wienerwald valleys, at Kalksburg a good two hours on 21 December.
