Spittelberg

History & character

From Spitalberg to the Spittelberg District

Spittelberg was an independent municipality until 1850, deriving its name from the Bürgerspital, which acquired the area in 1525. Initially, it was grazing land managed by various farms, without developing into a village. In the 17th century, a significant number of Burgenland Croats settled in the region, leading to the formation of a Croatian village that was destroyed during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna. After reconstruction, Spittelberg maintained a poor reputation until the mid-20th century due to its dense construction being considered unhealthy and the area being a hub for prostitution. In 1850, Spittelberg became part of the new Neubau district in Vienna.

Today, Spittelberg showcases luxury renovations and gentrification. The well-preserved Biedermeier houses and narrow streets give a glimpse into the original village. The district is known for its annual Christmas market and has developed into a vibrant scene area alongside the neighboring MuseumsQuartier, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Vienna.
