Schottenfeld

History & character

From Upper Court to Urban District

Schottenfeld was originally part of the Upper Court or St. Ulrich Court and belonged to Dietrich the Rich in the 13th century. Over the centuries, the area changed hands frequently until the Schottenstift took over the lease of the Upper Court in 1629. From 1719 onwards, large-scale construction of the Schottenäcker began, benefiting especially manufacturing businesses that found too little space within the city walls. Schottenfeld was elevated to its own suburb in 1777 and already had 129 houses and 20,000 inhabitants by 1779. The development of the district was marked by social and economic challenges, including the cholera epidemic of 1831 and the provision of soldiers during the French Wars.

Today, Schottenfeld is an urban district in the 7th district of Vienna, Neubau, characterized by its protected building zone and a mix of residential and commercial use. The local vernacular refers to the area between Schottenfeldgasse and Burggasse as Brillantengrund, highlighting the cultural significance of the district.
