History & character
From Suburb to Vibrant Shopping District
The district of Mariahilf has its roots in five former suburbs that were incorporated in 1850. Already in antiquity, Indo-Europeans settled here, and during the Roman Empire, a military camp was established. In the Middle Ages, the region developed through viticulture and clay extraction. After the destruction caused by the Turkish sieges in the 16th and 17th centuries, reconstruction began. In the 18th century, significant construction activity set in, leading to the establishment of numerous crafts and businesses. By 1862, the district of Mariahilf was defined in its current form, and Mariahilfer Straße became an important shopping street. Today, Mariahilf is a vibrant district characterized by a mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern shops. The public transport connections are well-developed, making the district attractive for residents and visitors alike.
