Gumpendorf

History & character

From Village by the Vienna River to Suburb

Gumpendorf has its roots as a small village by the Vienna River, which developed around the year 1000 along a former Roman road. The first documented mention dates back to 1130, and the name may derive from the term Gumpe, meaning puddle, as the unregulated Vienna River frequently caused flooding. Over the centuries, Gumpendorf experienced numerous destructions, including during the Turkish sieges in the 15th and 17th centuries. The construction of the city wall in 1704 finally provided better protection. From the 18th century, the area was favored by the Viennese nobility as a summer retreat, leading to the establishment of country houses and gardens. The Gumpendorf parish church was mentioned in the 13th century and underwent extensive reconstruction starting in 1765.

Today, Gumpendorf is a densely populated part of the 6th district, Mariahilf. The district is designated as a building protection zone by the city of Vienna and offers a mix of historic buildings and modern housing. Its good public transport connections and central location make Gumpendorf an attractive place to live.
