History & character
From Clay Pit to Modern Suburb
Laimgrube is considered one of the oldest suburbs of Vienna, first mentioned in documents in the 11th century. The name derives from the clay pits that existed since the 14th century on the slopes of the Wiental. Historically, the settlement was characterized by orchards and vineyards as well as brick production. In the 14th century, a chapel and a hospital were founded there, later taken over by the Franciscan order. Laimgrube experienced numerous destructions, including during the Turkish sieges, and was only rebuilt after long periods. By the 18th century, Laimgrube had expanded significantly, reaching into today's 7th district. By 1830, the suburb had already counted 8400 inhabitants and was known for its cleanliness.
