History & character
From Vineyards to Urban District
Magdalenengrund was an independent municipality between 1848 and 1850 and developed into a district in the 6th Vienna municipal district, Mariahilf. The name comes from the Maria Magdalene Chapel, which stood on St. Stephen's Square until 1781. Originally, the area was characterized by vineyards and was called Im Saugraben an der Wien auf der Gstätten. With the construction of the area in the 18th century, problems with vermin arose, giving the district the colloquial name Ratzenstadl. In 1799, Magdalenengrund was acquired by the city of Vienna and incorporated in 1850. The renovation of the district began in the early 20th century, and after World War II, the last remnants of the old buildings disappeared.
