History & character

From Suburb to Urban Density

Wieden is one of Vienna's oldest suburbs, first mentioned in 1137. The name derives from the term Widem, Widum, meaning parish farm or estate. In the 18th century, Wieden began to develop into a suburb, with numerous noble palaces being built. In 1850, it was incorporated as the 4th district of Vienna, and after the separation from Margareten and Favoriten, it shrank in size, becoming one of the smallest districts in Vienna. Historical buildings such as the Karlskirche, completed in 1737, and the Elisabethbrücke, built in 1854, still characterize Wieden today.

Today, Wieden is a densely populated inner district, marked by a mix of historical buildings and modern residential complexes. The Wiedner Hauptstraße serves as the district's center, while the Gürtel functions as an important traffic artery. Despite the limited green spaces, Wieden offers a high quality of life due to its central location and proximity to the historic city center.
