History & character
From Celtic Settlement to Modern Landstraße
Landstraße, the 3rd district of Vienna, has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age. The first traces of settlement can be traced back to the Celtic La Tène culture. Later, the area belonged to the Roman civilian city of Vindobona. In the Middle Ages, the suburb of Landstraße developed, suffering heavy destruction during the Ottoman sieges. In 1850, the district was formed by the incorporation of several suburbs, including Landstraße, Weißgerber, and Erdberg. Since then, Landstraße has developed into an inner-city area with a variety of cultural institutions and embassies. Today, the district is marked by landmarks such as the Belvedere Palace and the Hundertwasserhaus. It is now a vibrant residential area that combines both historical and modern elements, attracting a diverse population.
