History & character
From Roman Settlement to Urban Quarter
Erdberg is one of the oldest settlements in the Vienna area. Significant Roman finds and remnants from the Late Celtic and Early Roman cultures have been discovered in the area. The name Erdberg derives from a fortified ring wall constructed in the early Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century and evolved over the centuries into an agricultural settlement, shaped by the influx of Low German gardeners. In the 19th century, Erdberg began to transform through industrialization and the construction of municipal housing, especially after World War I. The Fiakerplatz serves as a reminder of the importance of the carters in the region. Today, Erdberg is a vibrant urban district with a mix of historical and modern buildings, forming part of Vienna's 3rd municipal district.
