History & character
From Weißgerbergrund to Urban Neighborhood
Weißgerber, formerly known as Weißgerbervorstadt, is a district in the 3rd district of Vienna, located along the Danube Canal. The first documented mention occurred in the 16th century when the area emerged after the First Turkish Siege of Vienna for tanners and leather workers, who had to settle outside the city due to the odor associated with their craft. In 1850, the suburb of Weißgerber was incorporated into Vienna and developed haphazardly in the 19th century. Historically significant sites such as the Gänseweide, where executions took place, and the hunting theater, where animal hunts were staged, shape the district's history.
Today, Weißgerber presents itself as an urban district with a mix of historical elements and modern living spaces. Its proximity to the Danube Canal and good public transport connections make the district attractive for residents and visitors alike.
