Fasanviertel

History & character

From Rural Area to Urban District

The Fasanviertel, named after the former beer house 'Zum Fasandl', was a rural area until the second half of the 19th century, characterized by fields. From 1860 onwards, extensive development began, transforming the district into an urban residential area. The Fasangasse, which runs through the district, was established shortly before 1800 and experienced gradual extension in the 19th century. Historical buildings like the Laveranhaus and various palaces testify to the former splendor of the district, which was also marked by poverty. Many of these buildings were destroyed during World War II, resulting in a high proportion of post-war constructions.

Today, the Fasanviertel is a popular residential area, characterized by its quiet streets and proximity to public transport connections. The conservation zones in Fasan- and Jacquingasse preserve some of the historical buildings, while the district has overall adopted an urban character.
