History & character
From Roman Legion City to Vienna's City Center
The origins of the Innere Stadt date back to a Celtic settlement and the Roman legion camp Vindobona. Until the incorporation of the suburbs in 1850, the history of the city of Vienna was closely linked to today's 1st district. Even after this incorporation, the Innere Stadt remained the political, economic, and spiritual center of Vienna, characterized by significant buildings such as the Hofburg and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The city walls, erected in the 13th century, protected the settlement area until their demolition in the 19th century. With the development of the newly freed space, the Ringstraße emerged, highlighting the city's grandeur.
Today, the Innere Stadt is a vibrant center with around 110,000 employees and numerous administrative authorities, tourism, and company headquarters. Despite its central location, the population is relatively low at just under 16,000, making it the least populated district in Vienna. The character of the Innere Stadt is shaped by a mix of history, culture, and urban life, attracting both locals and tourists.
