History & character
From Floodplain to Leopoldstadt
Leopoldstadt, since 1850 the 2nd district of Vienna, is named after Emperor Leopold I. Its origins date back to around 1300, when the Untere Werd was used as pasture land for cattle. The first bridge to the Untere Werd was mentioned in 1368. In the 15th century, Vienna acquired property here. From 1569, woodworkers and gamekeepers settled in the area, leading to the development of the suburb Jägerzeile. Starting in 1624, the Untere Werd was designated as a residential area for the Jewish population, earning the district the nickname Mazzesinsel. Despite repeated expulsions, the Jewish community thrived until the Holocaust. Today, Leopoldstadt is a vibrant district, characterized by cultural diversity and historical sites like the Prater and the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel.
